In April of 2012, the idea of producing men’s underwear in America came to Flint and Tinder. To their amazement, it was a unique idea– and with that knowledge, they began pursuing it. Launching a Kickstarter with the intentions of reviving the American cut and sew industry, Flint and Tinder was blown away by the response. With 5,578 people pre-purchasing $291,499 worth of underwear, by May 2012 Flint and Tinder was underway! Designing, manufacturing, trial and error, and constant improvement brought them to the end of September, 2012, when they began shipping their first orders. In October, 2012, they launched their website, and Esquire named Flint and Tinder one of the 10 Best New Online Men’s Shopping Sites. With business on the up and up, Flint and Tinder made the decision to launch another Kickstarter, in preparation of producing their 10-Year Hoodie, a sweatshirt, as they say “designed for life, guaranteed for a decade, and backed with a FREE mending.” This time raising more than $1 million from 9,226 supporters, 11,000 hoodies were made. Being in operation for over a year now Flint and Tinder has put up some impressive numbers as shown below:
-Shipping over 30,000 orders to 58 countries.
-Producing:
-109,000 briefs, boxer & trunk briefs
-48,000 socks
-9,3000 shirts
-3,600 pants/jeans
-1,500 button down shirts
…plus more items and accessories.
The best part about all of this is, it was all done right here in America–in a year! Doing some intense math calculating, they have estimated that with every 1,000 pairs of underwear made per month, one full time job was added or secured, and with even more calculating, Flint and Tinder estimated that over the year, they created around 34 full time jobs! With just the simple idea of producing menswear in America, Flint and Tinder has created jobs for Americans. Along with those jobs came a line of menswear hand-crafted, with the intention of producing items that will last longer than the competitors’, and be worn with pride!
