The creation of this classic toy was actually by accident when Richard James, an American engineer who worked with springs for balancing instruments used on ships, dropped a spring and was astounded at what he saw. He watched in amazement as his spring “walked” from the table to a stack of books to the floor and stand back upright.

James knew that he had come across a brilliant idea and he started to focus his career on the slinky. He began manufacturing the toy in New England: namely Pennsylvania and New York, and the Slinky was a huge hit. Toy stores were raving about the new product and were proud to announce that they carried it. In 2000, the slinky was inducting into the National Toy Hall of Fame.
